The MSc in Restorative Dental Science is a flexible and advanced programme providing high quality online and part-time postgraduate education. You will develop a deep and systematic knowledge and understanding of key concepts and latest evidence base.

It encompasses the dental restorative mono-speciality disciplines of endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics, making it suitable for primary care dentists looking to provide the best patient journey, delivered by enhanced skills, irrespective of your career stage or location.

The course is delivered across five modules designed to allow you to study in a flexible manner to suit your professional practice and lifestyle:

Pathogenesis and diagnosis of dental diseases and dental materials

As a primary care dentist, you will have a firm understanding of pathogenesis and diagnosis. The first module delivered on the MSc in Restorative Dental Science builds on your ability to assess, diagnose and create optimal treatment plans.

In this module you will also learn about the relevant properties of materials used across restorative dentistry, and plan how best to use these in the delivery of your restorative care.

Caries, tooth surface loss and direct restorations

This module will prepare you to better synthesise diagnostic information and produce appropriate diagnosis and management strategies for patients with dental caries and tooth surface loss. It will also allow you to interpret clinical information and formulate appropriate strategies for the restoration of teeth using direct dental materials, along with the use of tooth whitening within primary dental care.

Periodontology and endodontics

These diseases can provide many diagnostic and management challenges within primary care, particularly when they occur concurrently. This module builds on knowledge relating to the diagnosis and evidence-based management of periodontal and endodontic pathology. It also looks at appropriate approaches to interpret results and devise strategies to enhance the delivery of periodontal and endodontic care.

Fixed and removable prosthodontics

This module covers both fixed and removal prosthodontics. This includes reviewing the necessary techniques required for examining partially dentate patients along with interpretation of the results and choosing appropriate approaches.

It also covers the biological and mechanical principles of prosthodontic care along with the techniques available for replacing lost teeth, using both fixed and removable prosthodontics with supporting strategies for the delivery of care to benefit both your patients and your practice.

Masters project

This final module aims to develop evidence-based dentistry skills through the completion of an evidence synthesis project. You will design, plan and undertake a review of the evidence relevant to your chosen field of study. This project work will produce outputs which are prepared to a publishable standard, clearly and concisely written, methodologically justified, with accurate and transparent reporting.
